The AWS outage is the biggest industry news this week. Amazon blames human error over technology. The industry will certainly have a huge impact (or otherwise suggesting why CIO's should be worried about the outage. read here). Here is my view on the outage and what to consider when looking at any cloud solution.

Cloud computing is an emerging technology and certainly rule the next decade, no doubt about it. But certainly its not perfect, as any other technology that we have seen in the past two decades. However, one thing that cloud has its own advantages is that, it far outweighs the risks. I took more than 3 decades for a computer to make in the size of an iphone today - but cloud has improved exponentially in the last 7 years. As with any technology, ensure you take the necessary steps to protect your business by .

  • Scope - Clearly understanding what you are signing up.
  • Accountability - Make sure that you hold your providers accountable.
  • Disaster Recovery - Don’t put all your chocolates in the same bin
  • Risk Management - Understand the risks. Put a risk mitigation in place.
  • Quality - Low Cost # Quality. Be aware of the vendor / provider before you sign-up.

I hope this black cloud passes over and the industry bounces back with stronger measures in place to build the confidence back.
