Summary: The enterprise cloud storage provider (and SharePoint competitor) has just introduced its own app for the latest version of Windows.
Just as Windows 8 is fresh out of the gate, Box has already rolled out its own app for the new operating system.
For existing users of Box, there aren't many surprises here, if any. Essentailly, the launch of Windows 8 app fills out Box's all-around mobile strategy, which already includes native apps for iOS and Android devices.
The point of a cloud storage service, whether it be for enterprise customers or consumers (or both), is to be able to access files from anywhere, anytime on any device.
Thus, Windows 8 cannot be ignored by any business that significantly hinges on mobile -- even if Microsoft isn't expected to have a large piece of the mobile market pie for some time.
Additionally, considering that Box is also a competitor of Microsoft's SharePoint service, among others, it's no coincidence that the enterprise cloud storage provider isn't wasting any time whatsoever getting onto this platform with native access.
Never one to shy away from dropping a jab or two at Microsoft's expense at tech conferences, Box co-founder and CEO Aaron Levie said diplomatically in prepared comments, "The Windows 8 operating system represents a great opportunity for Box to deliver enterprise productivity for Microsoft Corp.'s hundreds of millions of customers."
There might be a few little differences here and there, such as the ability to pin live tiles to the Start screen, which is a trademark for Windows 8. Otherwise, the features are basic and straightforward. The most essential point is being able to access, view, edit, share and manage files stored in Box directly from any Windows 8 device.
Box for Windows 8 is available to download immediately for free in the Windows Store for all devices running Windows 8.
