What is it that drives you?

Whether it is an object, a career, or a way of life, at one point in our lives, we are all dreamers. The problem is that the vast majority of dreamers are effectively pressured into submission by society with the promise of a safe career and a stable income. Some tell themselves that after they are in a better position financially, they will take the plunge and pursue their now distant dream. The once blazing inferno that was their dream has been squelched by the predictability and reliability of a cookie cutter career. We all know how easy it is to fall into this mundane lifestyle, but what happens to those who dared for more?

Only the slim margin of people that give their all in the pursuit of a dream have the possibility of obtaining it. This past weekend, I finished reading the book The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, a book that embodies the ideology that one must dream and be willing to take risks. Failure is a part of life, but one's tenacity and persistence will keep pushing you forward to get to where it is you want to be. Something is learned from every hiccup in the road. It is not how far you’ve gone in life that makes life worth living; it is the journey along the way and the bumps in the road that paint life’s true picture.

Persistence pays off

It is easy to get down after life throws you an unexpected roadblock, but the path to success is often paved with these setbacks. Paving your own career is never easy, but the rewards can be immense. Joining AltaFlux has helped enlighten my view of what is possible; if you are determined enough, you can obtain what it is you’ve wanted all along. Sometimes our future dreams can seem to be overwhelming, but it is at this moment, when you feel like giving up, that you need to push your hardest.

Failure is a part of life

If everything was easily obtained, everyone would have it and there would be nothing to aspire to be or have. The inherent rigors of life separate those who are willing to make something out of nothing and those who are content with playing it safe. Principal at AltaFlux Vijay N. has made the journey from the corporate world to entrepreneur. The road has been full of ups and downs, but what he has learned along the way has truly prepared him to provide the best possible services to clients. Vijay is a firm believer that failure is one of the most powerful tools of teaching. You can’t be afraid of failure because if you are, it will paralyze you from ever taking risks.

There is no dream or goal that is too far or distant that makes it impossible. Tenacity for what you love can help you overcome even seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Many quotes, books, and movies have been written in the dreamer’s rhetoric, but few seize life’s opportunities in exchange for the perceived safety that the well-worn path has to offer. One very powerful quote from famed comedian Jim Carrey epitomizes why it is that this perceived security of the road most traveled is at its core, just perceived.  His quote is as follows:

“My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive.

I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.
